Stones
We settled into the green seat,
dropped gently in the sun and watched trains
there on Leicester Station, the freight engines crawling
through slowly on cargoes of granite, wagons
bound for a ring road somewhere south, and over
the sweet throb and hum of a diesel unit for Derby
idling on a far platform, our fingers
linked in close and secret beneath the coat;
curling my other hand, the left-in-the-cold
one, round the orange can and drew
sanctity from the cool delight of a draught
shared with you in this place.
I still and always recall that moment,
now a year and half dry, the Stones exposed
as a torment on the days I would run
away with you my love on trains.
