The Carpenter's Son
Other boys collected marbles, comics,
creepy things in match-boxes.
He went for women, young ones especially,
with nervous smiles and cow brown eyes.
He kept them in a glass jar
with holes pierced in the screw-top lid:
just enough air to keep
their pale skin from flaking.
He rescued them from angry men,
broken marriages, car accidents,
freak weather conditions, but mostly
he saved them from themselves:
their too trusting natures;
sheer stupidity.
He liked to examine them by torchlight
while the rest of the house was sleeping.
Let their candy pink nails and needle sharp shoes
massage his fat palms, tears drizzle
like grains of salt into his open wounds:
a delicious agony.
