In his dreams
This is the way it is:
I want another life
on the other side of the Atlantic-
I want some other children
and a pretty other wife
to soothe my soul and make me feel romantic.
Then with this new regime
I’ll need another house,
immaculately clean and extra tidy
with a fine designer kitchen
for the lovely other spouse
and the garden pruned and manicured, not weedy.
The gorgeous other woman
will be bosomy but slim
with legs like whippets’ legs, a sign of breeding.
She will indeed be younger
but there’ll be no other Him.
Her time will pass in loving me and feeding
my companions. She will be
a brilliant cook, a well-trained chef
able to impress the greatest gourmets
and the envy of each husband
and of each inferior wife
her patés and her entrées and her sorbets.
Now I’d like her to be witty
with a feminine veneer,
intelligent but not too ultra-clever.
Perhaps she will have sacrificed
a promising career
to shelter in her husband’s shade for ever.
My vision of existence
in this fine Utopian state
assuages guilt and fortifies my ego
and all the guys who hear me
will want to change their state
and clamour with one motion, “When can we go?”
