At the Louvre
I thought I knew her yet I never saw her face,
hidden by hair or people in the gallery,
perhaps we’d met in a different time or space.
If carefully closed doors become displaced
is there any safeguard against catastrophe,
I thought. I knew her yet I never saw her face
but is that knowledge? Or loss? Or has time misplaced
joy, small sorrows, or was it through some tragedy,
perhaps, we’d met? In a different time or space
we were firm friends, lovers, refused others’ embrace
and even then, though I never saw her clearly,
I thought I knew her. Yet I never saw her face;
although when dusk drifts from St-Martin I retrace
each street we walked in this city where, both lonely
perhaps, we’d met in a different time or space.
Her age remains the same, now as then, as I chase
past portraits and people in this long gallery:
I thought I knew her yet I never saw her face,
perhaps we’d met, indifferent to time or space.
