Basil du Toit
Feeling the Heat
This route has delivered a woman
into the captivity of my eyes.
At once I want a thermal copy
of her bodily warmth printed
onto my lips, to feel the exact
ninety eight degrees Fahrenheit
of her body's slow organic burn,
the diffusion to her beating skin
of heat from sinews, vessels,
glands, her cardio-vascular core.
But no such luck. Implicit rule
one hundred and seventy-three
defining Conduct in Public Places
ensures that I will pass by her
with a muffled look, my trap shut.
