Diagnosis
Stranger than folding the baby clothes,
pressing their softness to fit in the drawer,
knowing I’ll not be there to hang away
his long grey trousers with their fly and zip;
stranger than buying, the first school clothes,
the sweatshirt with its crest, the skirt,
knowing I’ll never take her shyly, close,
to buy the first thin bra or sanitary pads;
stranger than these to the woman in the glass
whose eyes meet mine as they always do,
is knowing neither she nor anyone will see
the gradual greying of her strong, black hair.
