Inheritance
Leaving the land of refuge,
the land that I know so well
the place where I matured,
learning, growing into what I know I am.
This land of hope and plenty
a land of rugged beauty,
raised the son that it adopted.
Grown is the man that stands before her
Ready to accept his manhood,
accepting the gift of a mother's love.
Gone are the days of tender nursing,
the time has come to seek ones destiny.
I must leave you my tender mother
and go to the place where it began.
The place of my conception,
the land of my birth.
The fatherland awaits the arrival of his son.
What will be my father's legacy?
His home is cursed with sorrow,
plagued by uncleansed pain.
Waiting for a spark to burn the house made of sticks and mud.
His birth right will pass to me,
awaiting my new found wisdom.
How do I stem the pain of violence,
cleanse the blood gone bad,
clean the wounds of hatred
without making them bleed the blood of innocence?
My father's house of sticks and mud
a beautiful home where the sticks intertwine tightly,
the mud rich with spirit.
Having withstood many an unnatural disaster.
It is not a shameful dwelling I inherit
this old and complex structure.
It is a legacy I belong to
one I must accept good and bad.
This the ancestral home
the dwelling of my past.
Ancestors calling me to create a destiny,
a legacy for the future to be inherited.
Where the flow of devastation has been stemmed.
