Michael Malone
Age of Reason
Wearing the face of my youth
a boy strolls atop the wall.
Callow feet navigate
shards of glass embedded
in the brick. He ignores
the six foot drop, seeing only
apples beaded with dew
at the far end.
I see glass snapping at his feet,
the drop pulling at his limbs…
But a warning cry
singes my tongue,
burnt off like fog
by a hungry sun.
