Some Thing in Me
Cypresses, lined up, furled on their sticks,
are spaced exactly, so dry and stiff,
you’d think the torrrential night which left
so much swollen, exhausted, overhung,
had been no more than a trumped-up crisis;
these days some official occupant stands
dead-pan like this, and stiff to attention,
in me: water-off-a-duck’s back, resistant
to the effortless beauty of these hills,
the breathless drops, this darling morning;
something laconic, as windows are flung open
again; something dark, something clerical,
dismissive of the roses wreathed in the vines,
something outlasting the millenial olives
contorted and flickering after the storms.
