Caesium
Hidden in a bunker
by the US Bureau of Standards,
atomic clocks define the second,
their red eyes blinking
in the dark.
Caesium atoms
pulse and oscillate,
hidden from seasons,
hours and festivals;
a perfect nuclear net, on-line
for Coordinated Universal Time.
Outside on manicured turf
a dandelion survives
to brave the day.
The Shepherd’s Clock,
with golden mane and lion heart,
lives to track the sun
a few more times.
After retiring from a career lecturing and researching in Organic Chemistry, Brian Biddle has surprised himself, his wife and sceptical colleagues by writing poetry which often attempts to bridge the arts/science gap. His poems have appeared in a number of magazines.
