On their first days at school, Monkey Kettle had the following for their packed lunch...
BOOKS
“Primo Levi” by IAN THOMSON. A compelling biography of a complex writer and being // “All Families Are Psychotic” by DOUGLAS COUPLAND. He gets better and better – this is darkly cynical zeitgeisty stuff // “Danse Macabre”, KINGY’s turn-of-the-Eighties tome on the horror genre // Have spent most of 2005 so far wading slowly through “The Old Testament” – so far my favourite bit is Samuel, although it might take me a while to finish it all... // “Love All The People” – writings and routines by BILL HICKS. Now that’s MY Old Testament! // “The Man Who Found The Missing Link” by PAT SHIPMAN – very interesting biog of the obsessive Eugene Dubois.
MUSAK
“Super Fashionista Dance Troupe” : HELP SHE CAN’T SWIM. Shouty art-rock ploughing a similar furrow to the early days of the late lamented Bis // And speaking of BIS, I finally bothered to buy “Return To Central”, their last album, from 2001. And well worth it it was too! // “No Cities Left” : THE DEARS // “Unwritten” : NATASHA BEDINGFIELD. Ahem. // “Antics” : INTERPOL. Darktastic // “Happiness In Magazines” : GRAHAM COXON // “The Lost Riots” : HOPE OF THE STATES
FILMS
“Return Of The King” (2003, dir.Peter Jackson) – I know I’ve praised it before, but the full four-hour wedge is the greatest film ever made, well worth the wait // “Team America : World Police” (2004, dir.Trey Parker) – the puking scene almost made me spew, but I gritted my teeth and survived. Very good, but not quite as good as the South Park movie for me... // “Kill Bill (1 & 2)” (2003, dir.Quentin Tarantino) – finally! And well worth the wait. I think p’raps his best work… // “The Gods Must Be Crazy” (1980, dir.Jamie Uys) - Odd!
RATTLE BAG
Simon turned 30, on a weekend bender in Norwich. Ow // The Second Monkey Kettle Arts Exhibition took up most of our lives in January, but seemed well received. If you saw it, hope you liked it! // The Mighty Boosh // The forthcoming Monkey Kettle Greatest Hits – finally, in 2005, I promise! // Nathan Barley //
