The elms are Atlases staving off sky
Azure and gold, over careening cars:
A splash of chrome, a glassy clairvoyance
Bowling along past Burlington Arcade
We shall not see the sun go down upon
The royal park’s weekend masses sunning
Themselves under an altar canopy
Gold leaf on gold, the pollen fused in heat.
Beside the vaulting trees, whose depths aspire?
Grilled to a cinder, schooldays reverie,
The Gothic thrust of branches softening
In old daydream of first intensity
Let slip between polite evasions, forms,
Family tableaux gossip in the shade.
