Poem to my Daughter
Be angry.
Make people furious.
Infuriate - those who sneer at suffering,
welcome war, enjoy pain.
Be loud.
Make people yell.
Decry - those who deny feelings,
suppress truth, smother passion.
Be intolerant.
Try people’s patience.
Refuse - those who collude with evil,
co-operate with misery, revel in fear.
Be lazy.
Lie around in a hammock.
Eschew - all work for greedy profit,
grinding routine, mindless drudgery.
Laugh with wilful wildness.
Dance with dreadful abandon.
Love with formidable desire.
Make love with fierce sensuality.
Give birth with shocking intensity.
Sing with fearful verve.
And celebrate life
with appalling gaiety.
