Sunset Over Wales
An orange tint, a ruddy glow,
a darkened land stretched out below.
A sky alive with gentle cloud
awaiting evening's masking shroud.
A sandbank showing tide's full ebb
with waters still in channel wide
and lights of night to paint their web
on distant Cambrian countryside.
It is that time of day or night
when sun departs, slips out of sight
for darker life to show its hand,
take hold of this melodic land.
Think hard, think long in Tiger Bay
on how you plot your Nation's way.
Look West and North, meet Mid-Land thought
before you seize what may be sought.
Perhaps it's right to go alone,
depart from ancient English throne;
in law and language make a stand,
flex muscle strength, show winning hand.
That may for Wales be route ahead,
a final breaking of the tie,
to make its nationalistic bed.
What will be lost; what customs die?
Not all in speech seek move apart.
Welsh Northern tongue takes different form
from Southern brogue - that's for a start
and would new currency be born
away from sterling's solid base
the Euro coin perhaps to grace
and will there be new frontier posts,
and passport books, new boundary boasts?
Not always will that ruddy glow
enhance the land, or welcome show.
And often where there hangs a cloud
it could just cast a deathly shroud,
a Nation's ship of cherished pride
no more than fit one tide to ride
before a Euro current strong
erodes, consumes its Cambrian song.
