My mother didn’t work after she was married but she had a
routine anyway. Cleaning in the morning and a rest after lunch.
On Fridays she went to the hairdresser. Although she had passed
the exams for the civil service she couldn’t work for them. Her
father had never been naturalized. My father used to take us out
on a punt. Later, we graduated to a cabin cruiser. In his naval
jacket with the brass buttons my father negotiated the locks. My
sister spent hours on the roof of the boat with her back to us.
