Editorial: Now We are Five
In the summer of ’99, lying in bed on a Sunday morning in our house in Marjoram Place (I think it might even have been the morning of Folk on the Green), I turned to Helen and said “D’you know, I think I’m going to start a poetry magazine. That way, I can publish my own poetry, without all those horrible rejections I get from other mags, plus all our mates who write can be in it, and it’ll be a laugh”.
I never dreamt that five years later, we would still be here, indeed, have come as far as we’ve come. It’s been a brilliant ride so far, and we’ve met and fallen in love with many excellent and interesting people along the way, people who without Monkey Kettle we would never have come across. And it’s no longer just about us and our mates, it’s become far bigger, far better and far lovelier than that.
The best thing about the mag is that it mixes local culture with national, we have young and not-so-young poets from MK rubbing shoulders with established poets from the UK and abroad. The magazine thus far has acted as a proving ground for developing writers, as well as gaining a fervent cult following among those who respect and enjoy our cheerfully half-assed stance on poetry and writing. I hope you all enjoy this Bumper Birthday Issue! Huzzah!
And now we are five, I have plans to make the Monkey Kettle Empire bigger and better than ever before. 2005 should see the release (finally) of the long-vaunted Monkey Kettle Greatest Hits So Far, as well as several new Monkey Kettle Press items. Plus the web page will slowly regain its former glory, and... erm... lots else. Stick around, it’ll be ace! Mine’s a Babycham!
