The Right Thing
On the platform at Holland Park tube
I found a bag, left by a bench
When someone had run to the train
Eager to get somewhere, to someone,
Leaving everything behind.
In the bag was a purse
With plenty of cash, a scarf,
Some keys, nothing else.
I knew I would not even
Try to give it back.
The blue Jag,
Parked around the corner,
Was a bonus. I couldn't drive,
Neither could my friends,
But we drove the Jag
To Shepherd's Bush,
Onto the A40 and headed West:
Oxford, the Cotswolds, Hereford,
Mid-Wales, until we'd spent
All the cash and stood
Beneath the granite houses at Borth
In a drizzle, round us like a cloud,
Looking at the Atlantic's
Grey face and white teeth and wishing
We'd done the right thing
And headed South.
