The new [13th] Poet Laureate Consultant in the Library of Congress [US] is Ted Kooser. He is described as ‘a major poetic voice for rural and small town America, the first laureate chosen from the great Plains.’ He will begin his period of office by opening the library’s literary series in October.
The Duchess Anna Amalia Library, a Unesco world heritage site, was badly damaged by fire on 2nd September. Goethe was once the director there and among material saved was the library’s Faust collection (the largest in the world) and a Luther Bible of 1534. 40,000 books and other items were damaged or destroyed.
Sally Clark recently won 2nd prize in the BBC’s Wildlife magazine’s annual poetry competition (in association with Radio 4 ‘Poetry Please’) with her poem ‘Luck of the draw’ [published in this edition of CM].
Poets can endure anything, except a printing error.
