We will always remember Ricardo
with his beat-up floppy fedora hat on
leaned over
that big steaming tank of toxic solvent
in the dark corner of the old brick factory building smiling
we will always remember Wes
with his Marine hat on
throwing 150-pound vises around on his bed mill
and furiously cranking its 1-ton head up and down
with the broken teeth of a crank handle
like no amount of weight of steel or broken handle teeth could stop him
and Jorge
with his shirt off on the 80-year-old Acme Gridley
screw machine
drenched with sweat and beaming
with happiness because $12-an-hour seemed like a fortune
he could take back to El Salvador we
will always remember Tommy
in his knee-high rubber boots half-drunk
from early morning whiskey at The Lucky 7 Room
striding up and down his 100-yard-long spar mill
screaming at all the operators of the little machines beneath him
to go fuck themselves
or Marvin
never speaking to anyone but hiding
behind the green sides of his machine hugging close to it
for 20 years
like it was his only friend we will always remember these men
with their machines
that gave them their lives.
