A Lesson In Economics
To make bread you take
flour, water, yeast, some
salt and bake it. To catch
fish you hang a line where
fish are and drag them out.
Historically it is better
if the loaves are made from
barley and the fish dried
but probably any fish and bread
will do and there are
excellent ones in Sainsbury’s.
The difficulty begins when
even with 3 million unemployed
you cannot find 5000 hungry
people to watch you break
the bread and divide the fish.
This miracle became redundant
2000 years ago, and was
never popular. A few people
still meet to talk and sing
about it and you can’t blame
them for that nor for the way
they drive home afterwards.
Nobody’s sorrier than they
are about the way the bread
the fish and the people will not
get up and walk around but
they know that even if they did
somebody would gather them up
and sell them back for
a week’s work and that
somehow there will always be
about 3 million unemployed.
