Looking for a Keepsake
I choose the metal spoon
with the decorative holes
surely meant for straining.
Time for the scrapings.
I grated my tongue
through the creamy mix.
Into the wide aluminium bowl
with its pouting lip
you’d tip real butter,
clicking it round the sides,
gritting in the sugar,
your clockwise wrist
quickening in the eggs
slowing in the flour
so that the spoon became
worn down the left side.
