Like old lags in a police line-up
they stand ranked and floodlit.
Under the eyes of guards we hesitate
before each in turn, suspicious
of their alibi that they’ve always lived
at this address. We search for signs
– false starts, errors, accidents –
of an existential past but deadpan
in their Sunday frames they refuse
to assist with our enquiries.
Kevin Murray is a Melbourne poet whose recent collection Jaywalking Blues was runner-up in two major Australian poetry prizes earlier this year.
