Clutch
When you stepped off the clutch
The rain changed colour and I heard it sigh
And your face didn’t even feel the sky break in my face,
Or the bump - I imagined your hair wet
Or the sound - in the early morning light
As you backed into my heart.
An accident, a fender-bender
Of dreams that had been left unfinished,
We pretended it was a slight collision
A cloud-drenched moment - you didn’t see me coming
Of madness - I didn’t see you come in
And patched it up with magic sellotape and air miles.
Even the trees knew it was a coincidence
And the stars laughed at us meeting again.
A wrong turn, five minutes either way
We would have missed - how can I explain
The moment - why I miss you every day
Like a colour we’ve never seen, an empty room somewhere
Filled with light.
