Narcissus, such a sensitive aspen about his own feelings, can become an asp with regard to the feelings of his friends. In reviewing The Natural Bent (1) I forbode to quote the worst instances of this: the cruel passages about Signora Milani and her unfortunate son. It was this much ridiculed lady who introduced Mr Fielden to Berenson, and Mr Fielden was a frequent and privileged guest at I Tatti. And this cheap jibe about Berenson maintaining ‘the pose of the scholar, while at the same time making millions out of the dubious association with Duveen’ is the result. Enough said. In this case words do fail me, for such vulgarity is not what one expects of a man who poses as an artist.
