Exploration
My partner and I
were standing together in complete silence
watching the torchlight procession.
She appeared out of nowhere,
grabbed my hand and pulled
me through the crowd.
Voices, noises, colour, lights.
We ran from street to street
until the hubbub quietened,
the glow from the torches dimming
in the distance.
Nearing the seafront we passed
tourists and steamy takeaways,
the pungent aroma of cracking fat
and sweet and sour sauce.
We walked further up the beach.
Hands shaking
she traced her name
in the soft wet sand,
then slowly lowered her boot
over each and every letter.
