Pentecost
all wandering done -
never Rome, and never Jerusalem,
and here to end
where the waves swallowed the world
after death-day, the necessary Journey
coughing like a bairn with tender tubes
tickled by wood-smoke and sea-fret,
his hard inspiration fading
best think before you start
where you might be going
all thought now humbled,
lost in the receding firmament
lay my nameless bones
grateful in the sea-seeking soil,
for I was blessed, and made my fear
a tongue of fire
