Welcome to the fifth in an infinite number of possible definitions of The North, this one characterised, I think, by a view of human relationships that is both passionate and perceptive. This North has always measured the world by its own originality, and respected that quality in those from elsewhere. It exists, don’t worry.
The most pleasant thing about editing this issue has been that I have gathered the poems together by listening rather than reading. I encountered the work of all but three of the poets featured here by hearing them, either at performances or workshops, in West Yorkshire. Poetry is not only alive and well here, it is necessary. Get busy poets: contributions always welcome, as are cheques.
