Christmas Time
It began with the toddler
screaming and crying
as he was dragged up to street level
from the metro station
into the drizzling December day.
Then his mother was crying
her face crumpled and pouring,
next everyone in the street
was howling, sobbing and weeping,
men were grunting, faces
distorted and wet, women
blubbered in doorways
and news vendors slumped
heads buried in damp newsprint.
Carols tinkled somewhere beneath
the bawled outpouring of misery
and the toddler, that bloody toddler,
stood quietly, unafraid and smiling
by his shuddering mother.
