At noon he found himself
in Soho, in a bar
where women took their clothes off.
He ordered a drink.
The glass to his lips. Smack against the counter.
I shall write, he said, a symphony.
I have it in me
to compose a masterpiece.
A drink, he said, a drink
for the unknown composer.
The glass to his lips. Smack, the counter.
I was married once, he said,
to nobody in particular.
She was a wonderful girl. I think
I’d like another.
Several new faces came in off the street.
To the future, he said. But let us
not lose sight of yesterday.
He rifled pockets for a diary.
And read in silence.
