Thoughts Before
You can tell it from the eyes
They come in forcing normality
but there’s an awkwardness in the talk
and that wariness in the eyes
You long to say "just accept it
I’m content and ready”
but that seems ungrateful
to those who really care
After all it’s not a bad way to go
pain controlled, surrounded by family
and with the brain still functioning
in so far as it ever did
That was always my biggest fear
that I would go out gibbering
recognising no-one
remembering nothing
I guess if I’m really honest
I wish that I’d been here
three years or so ago
It’s been such a lonely time
I’ve never been religious
never been convinced by theories
about gods or after-lives
but at times like this you wonder
I’m prepared to be proved wrong
and if there is something after
I’ll take it gladly
but only if she’s there
