Things Are Getting Stranger All The Time
Driving through Islington, early evening,
and we visit Laura, who tells us that Turks
lounge all day in the street,
smoking, and admiring each other’s cars.
And the man next door was murdered,
stabbed for a few pennies and cigarettes,
and the black bags from his shop
are rotting in the alleyway at the back,
the smell rising steadily upwards.
One Sunday afternoon, she looked out
of the rear window, and saw a man,
pearl-grey pants around his sharkskin shoes,
screwing a woman on top of the bags.
And then she takes us to a pub which,
in the middle of summer, is decorated
with Christmas trees and tinsel.
