Its round face shone like his did after sex,
glistening like some rare mineral that she
might shape as rings for fingers, toes.
But when its Mona Lisa smile
dwindled, love waned too.
Next month when the moon was full again
she did not want its stupid grin,
did not want its light,
wanted to switch the damned thing off,
sulk and grieve beneath the quilt.
August came: purple clematis beneath the moon,
scent of jasmine seeping in.
On such a night the moon rose huge and red,
filled the sky from east to west.
Peeping neighbours saw her in the street,
staring upwards. Curious, they watched,
then, one by one, they stole outside.
Soon the street was full of faces craning up,
each mouth a wide stretched O of wonder,
marvelling at the moon.
