A Spill At Goldie's Suicide
Stubborn at the remoteness of ditch
murmurs don’t reach him -
glazed over gold-crusted eyes
drifting low-tumbled horizons
impressions of her
blur down to
a time when tails swished
quick-winged irritants
mare support - affectionate touches
spring green gallops
and neighs across nourishing meadows
grooming to stimulate
animal closeness
a little girl’s hand
on the edge of a sweep
a heartbind of plaits
red ribbons
flapping in tree-tall breezes
but that was before the widow’s cruise
the goldrush disintegration
horse whips
rotting straw, disease and backache
the mutism of pleas
distress tight in the throat
and too much is always too much
sacks of earth, a good pull
to the bottom of the cliff.
