Black
A crow
in the middle of the road
like a brushstroke
marking a word
on an opened scroll
in a script I cannot read
that only lifts
as I approach
at the last moment
with a sudden clap
of wings, abrupt
a messenger
to search me out
on this empty stretch
of country road
with a summons
from the lord of poetry
and prophecy – or
the black god of death.
