Nicholas Paton Philip
A lesson in memory
First and last days;
Suppressed tears, soiled pants.
Murky corridors make way for
Blatant lie – The best years of my life.
I flip-flop from loneliness
Through splashes of inspiration
To despair.
Such a merry-go-round;
The bells of conformity,
The babbling claustrophobic rabble,
Lame ducks as legitimate targets
Bobbing helplessly against the tide.
And who teaches me how to breathe,
Stand tall, be immodest
And fail?
I need a break before I’m broken.
