I’m standing at the Platz Der Republik in Berlin looking up at Christo’s wrapped Reichstag & watching the myriad of people milling about & being forced to interact & intermingle because of the mere proximity & I’m listening to the clicking whirring & zooming of thousands of cameras & the hot summer sun is reflecting off of the shiny material that’s billowing slightly in the warm summer breeze & straining ever so slightly against the heavy blue ropes & the light is entering my eyes & the image of the wrapped Reichstag is registering on the screen of my brain & I’m thinking This is it this is The Big Spectacle & you’re here to witness it & I’m trying just to be open to whatever it is that Christo is trying to say trying not to think about the 13 million Deutsche Marks that he spent for this trying not to think about all the articles I’ve read & the TV shows I’ve seen where the so-called experts have been assessing & discussing & defining & redefining & putting forth pros & cons & totally missing the point & I’m trying not to get hung up in the definition of art & all its various parameters & criteria trying just to let the whole thing resonate & find a place in my being then it occurs to me that I’m probably just trying too hard that nothing will ever manifest itself as long as I’m so wrapped up in the polemics of 100,000 square meters of shimmering polypropylene & 15 kilometers of bright blue rope & one ugly building with a notorious past in the middle of Berlin that will soon be back amongst us as though nothing had ever happened.
