Jeanette Hattersley
Unidentified
No one had caressed his face for years,
or so it seems,
till flames devoured it at King’s Cross.
They fashioned him from bone and plaster,
took photographs,
then hung him, lonely on a poster.
No one came forward to claim him,
no distraught wife,
no fretting mother, son or daughter.
Did he walk out? Slam door after door,
escaping from
the taxman, or landlord, a sour affair?
Maybe his love took a night-flight
over oceans.
Someone left a bar indignantly,
perhaps, cursing the new date to hell
for not showing,
cursing him and the wasted journey,
a sequence of waits and diversions,
talk of a fire,
rumours of chaos and worse to come.
I take him home.
