Frying Mosquitoes
A truck parked
in the country.
The driver reading,
licking his fingers
to turn a page.
Undulant fields
in a sticky summer;
fires in the forest,
chanting of insects.
The bonnet
hot as a grill
frying mosquitoes.
A hundred yards down the track
music faintly plays,
loud enough to claim
the driver’s reverie -
what creatures could they be
one part of him questions,
while the other
blames it all
on those Italians.
Not far off
cool wind chords,
moon, cuckoo,
rustlings where none should be,
earth unidentified
by the swish of star,
flash of meteor
but it warms and glows
as all around
grows cold
debritic, distant.
We can be friendly,
thinks the driver
easing into gear,
having playfully left
fragments of dream,
traces of music.
