Haiku Pensées 1
Haiku are through the mirror, not on it. Shadows of experiences are never reflected. Experiences, activities cannot be deconstructed and reconstructed exactly. Only the extension of mental functions, a remnant of the ‘objective’, of the object, can remain.
It is fantasy to believe that ‘reality’ can be captured or even encapsulated. Mirrors, reflections, suspension of beliefs and judgments; there lie the clues. Results have no verbal vanishing point; depth is reversed; a coexistent event evolves. Words are not a medium best suited for taking up the contents and exhalations of the superimposed connections of and between realised momentary events and experiences. Ability to replicate the subject, the ‘real’, is an illusion in which we haiku poets too often immerse ourselves, as if a baptism is on the cards! Not even a trompe l’oeil equivalence is possible. Available is the medium and only the medium, which enables a transfiguration of activities to occur. It changes the everyday event, which acts as a trigger, into an aesthetic. This happens every time, despite the simplicity of any words used. Haiku is either the seductive, ectoblastic expression of a recent but past event or it is a new event, which reconstitutes as a new event for each reader, and again new with the passing of time, new knowledge or new application of existing knowledge which, in turn, alters our perception of, and relation to, the world and its contents. It is never the event itself The interpretative features and characteristics of language traverse all other considerations, and are quintessentially reflective and reflexive.
Haiku operate on the experience of each person’s sensibility to their ‘reality’, removing and adding, placing and replacing, as with plastic surgery. Many times haiku provides subliminal comfort, satisfaction and a sense of achievement to an hallucinating Ego, the same one that fails to appear in any mirror, even if only as a luminous condition or as a special effect within the event, the representations of which are studiously avoided. As with pictorial space, the two-dimensional is changed into an illusion of three-dimensional space. This illusion of space makes an image beyond and different from it. Haiku adds, not reduces, dimensions, escalates the cerebral, is a celebration of change and changed movement, not the movement that could be really useful. What changes is the exactness, the precision of the ‘moment’. ‘Simultaneity in time’ is too big a contradiction to resolve known dimensions. At best, there is only simulated value, but even this can be more ‘real’ than the ‘real’ of events, which is a transgressive condition suffered from local inability to coexist in a number of layered dimensions which, although not so, simulate simultaneity.
