My mother’s kitchen
My mother’s kitchen is empty now.
It has all been cleared -
the dead geraniums, the cooker
she could no longer use,
the green cupboards my father
fitted in the 1950’s, the bowls,
the china with the leaping stag,
the potatoes bubbling round the joint,
the recipes on faded paper.
She’s wheeled up to the table now
remembering sometimes in a slide of mind
that saucepan, those dents,
a tea-towel with heraldic arms,
the castles she visited in Spain.
John Daniel is published in a wide variety of magazines. A Winner of the Exeter prize and commended in last year’s National, his poems have also appeared in anthologies - 23 British Poets (Swallow) and Faber Introduction series. A volume, Missing the Boat, was published last year by Etruscan Books.
