Individually these poems hurtle, there’s a kind of lead-guitar urgency here, like the indie aesthetic of enjoying the exhilaration of both hurt and anger, usually at the same time. Our saturation-languages - youth culture, media culture, information registers which substantially overlap – have their volume turned up by Smith against themselves – turned around, adjusted, but, necessarily, not always resisted (how could they be?). Structurally, as poem overlaps with poem, detail is traced over preceding detail, a musical refrain or a decorative pattern is seen / heard to underlie sequences that replay and transmute their own elements, creating another deeper rhythm across the collection. City lyrics: funny, petulant, passionate, a strop and starry-eyed strut.
