Define and Kill
Mystery must be defined ;
Mystery moves in the mind
On edge, like wind at dawn, like words half-heard.
It must be civilised and dressed in dogma,
Attacked by explanation, shot like bird
To old unfeeling flesh and motionless feather,
The question hardly asked be given answer
Half-understood and then both killed together.
She came as miracle ;
She came as mystery,
Unnoticed as pale sap within spring trees
Beneath grey bark, transported soul,
Transmuted body, broke the pagan ease,
As strange and fundamental as the will
Of God. Can I restore a previous whole,
Define, explain, attack and kill?
