Embroidery
We embroider the look of our bed
till it’s so svelte
we’re silenced by it.
I power dress it: piped fat satin.
Inlay silk, overlay velour,
swathe tasselled pillows with organdie
specially hunted where stalls heap
bolt over bolt, asking to be
stroked, exposed, bought, disordered.
And then we make the bed a bonfire.
Argentine fingers thread layers
in red and gold with bluestone needles.
When we wake up, puffed by a final
flare of stitch, we slide down ash.
It’s always this plain pile in the morning,
a template for an embroiderer.
