Editorial
There are quite a good crop of haibun in this issue, prefaced by David Cobb’s note on line lay-out of haiku prose. The general question of writer/editor input regarding lay-out is an interesting one. There’s no doubt that, with haiku for instance, writers are very determined to have their choice of layout adhered to – but there has to be some consideration given to how the whole layout looks on the page. If everyone insisted on different fonts, for example, the whole could look a dog’s dinner.(though Raw Nerves seems to do it and even makes a feature of it) The question is never this extreme of course, – but people can be quite insistent on details, for example on different ellipsis/kireji/dash markers
I’ve had - -- … ~ --- ― – ─

One person has pointed out that the extended “m” dash might best be accessed via symbol, not via the text keys, as it makes it a line’s thickness lower and therefore nearer to the centre line! (compare as marked above)
As editor, I don’t propose to be quite so insistent in maintaining a Blithe Spirit House Style, but questions of how people prefer their titles, indents, use of italics, etc., and how contributors like their references and bibliographies laid out, should be thought about, and all do raise issues of how much “tidying up” an editor does for the sake of consistency. For future reference with submitted articles, the House Style of Blithe Spirit would favour the Harvard system of referencing as this seems to be the most used by contemporary academia.

This issue also introduces the “New Members” item, planned as an irregular feature to show-case writers who have recently joined the BHS. Some new members are already very experienced writers so this is in no way a “novice” section. It may be a good opportunity to remind those members who do feel that there is always something to learn from sharing work with another writer, that there is a feedback service offered by Colin Blundell. He is happy to offer mentoring and suggestions on work for anyone who would like to send material to him.

Finally, a reminder about the Members Anthology. The subject for 2005 is “RIVER”. Each member may submit up to five haiku on the theme from which one will be chosen. The deadline for submissions is 1st October 2005.
