Bound each to each
At quite an early age it was clear to me
that grown-ups made wild and provocative statements,
like ‘Raspberries’ (despite their sharp protective
edge) ‘are preferable to strawberries’
(which clamour to be eaten). And they devised
strange abstractions, such as draught and damp -
concepts in which they said you should not sit.
I think that even then I said to myself,
‘Grown-ups have been there before. Can’t they remember?’
Now I know that most of them can’t, and a child’s
world is as baffling to them as theirs to a child -
both alien territory, full of shadows and murmurs,
dead ends and mysterious absolutes.
