Waiting for Ali
Sunday afternoon,
the last of the clematis fading to lilac
in the sun crazed yard.
Lester Young jumping sax,
laughin’ to keep from cryin’.
My hand still trembling
from your last text,
another half hour—don’t go anywhere!
As if I could.
This feeling:
a spring tide
erasing the breakwater.
Soon you’ll be at the door,
your hair a halo
flooding the dark porch
and my fingers will burn
in its pure heat
till night falls.
