Impossible Figures
It goes on
and on (she still in blue)
he walking up the steps
she walking down
never quite reaching
the roof-garden
the wine-cellar
there’s nowhere else to go
but in passing
their eyes meet
and they smile like clerks
again and again
sometimes they have
a word or two
but never the wanted
the needed three
now and then in the future
they are even tempted
to finish it all
leap into the whiteness
but it goes on
nothing else happened
he will climb the steps
she will descend in blue
