Behind me a wet night
traffic’s building up, coaches,
taxis, landaus, armies of feet.
At home my mother’s peeling spuds,
dad and uncles downing Double-Diamond
at the Pelham Mount.
The Tower is busy: Reginald Dixon’s
coming up from the ballroom floor
on his Wurlitzer, and Charlie Barlow’s
band are taking a break.
Someone’s bust someone’s nose
over a girl from Barnsley: her lipstick’s
smeared, her girlfriend’s sick.
The Beatles haven’t arrived yet,
when they do we will be ready for them.
