Correspondence
Our bedroom seems larger than it is.
It feels a long way to the other end
where I climb up to look through
the attic windows onto the street.
On the king-size bed, the opened
square envelope without a stamp
against the deep red quilt.
My mouth is filled with iron filings,
my hands colder than the marble fireplace
and there’s a smell of rain.
Through the open window I can hear
the police horses fretting in their yard.
