Poem For Enthusiasts
Give me the types
who are always enthusiastic,
who play their accordions
and let the decorating decline,
who frequent old bookshops
on rain-swept afternoons,
and sit in friendly pubs
reading crumbling paperbacks.
And those who write letters
to local newspapers to say
they collect travelling irons,
and need a model 1521
manufactured in Manchester in 1956,
and where can one be found?
Yes, give me people like that,
and spare me from meeting those
who talk of holidays and homes
and cars and careers,
but who never seem to know
where something rare lies hidden.
